Instructions for Preparation

Please fill in the Abstract Submission and Young Investigator Award application, if applicable. (Award application available within Step 5 of the Abstract Submission).

1. Descriptors
These descriptors are used to classify abstracts for review and indexing. Please ensure that you have ticked One box that approximates the content of your abstract.

2. Title
The title should be brief, but adequate to clearly identify the nature of the study. The title must be in UPPER CASE.

3. Authors
Authors’ names should follow immediately after the title. Initials should precede the last name. Omit degrees and titles. The name and contact details of the author who will present the abstract, if selected, must appear on the abstract submission form. The name and location(s) where the work was undertaken must also appear.

The body of the abstract should start without an indent, after leaving one blank line below the title, and the abstract should contain the following:

a) a maximum of two sentences stating the study’s objectives;
b) a brief statement of methods used;
c) a summary of the results - including a brief comment on statistical methods, and show summary data wherever possible;
d) a statement of conclusions (NB it is not satisfactory to state, "the results will be discussed");
e) tables and figures may be included, but must fit within the space allocated.

In order for your abstract to be considered, download the Abstract Proforma Template supplied. Use this to type up your abstract, and save this file to submit during Step 4 of the abstract submission process.

To download, right click on the link. A drop-down menu will appear. If using Internet Explorer, select "Save Target As..." From the menu. If using Netscape, select "Save Link As" from the menu. Then, choose a location to save the file to your computer.

Tip for Macintosh computers: If you are using a Macintosh computer with a mouse that has only one button, you can open the pop-up menu by holding down the control key while you click the link.

 

5. Tables & Graphs
Simple tables and graphs may be included if they fit inside the abstract box. Do not submit separate graphs or tables.

6. Abbreviations
Abbreviations should conform to the Style Manual for Biological Journals. Avoid abbreviations in the abstract title. Place non-standard abbreviations in parentheses after the full word the first time it appears. Use no more than three (3) non-standard abbreviations.

7. Drug Names
Drug products mentioned in the abstract should be identified by their non-proprietary (i.e. generic) name only. Do not capitalise non-proprietary names.

8. Identification
To enable your abstract to be identified your surname must appear in the name of the abstract for example "smithagw2007abstract"

9. Do not use
A font smaller than Times Roman 11 point (10 point on figures and footnotes) when printed;
Indents at the beginning of paragraphs;

Do
Ensure abstract fits within the sample box;
Keep italics and Greek symbols to a bare minimum.
Ensure that all track changes have been removed from the abstract.
• Proof read your abstract. (abstracts are printed as submitted).

10. Submission
You must submit your abstract online.
Abstracts that do not comply with the above criteria will not be accepted.

11. Deadline
Abstracts and payment must be received no later than 12 midnight on Friday, 2 June 2007. No abstracts will be accepted after this date.

You will be advised by mail after 31 July 2007 whether your abstract has been accepted and, if so, what format of presentation it has been chosen for.

12. Checklist
Before submitting your abstract, check that you have:
Adhered to all requirements (including ethics);
Selected one appropriate research descriptor;
Carefully proof read your abstract;
Paid the sum of AUD$44 for each abstract submitted; and
Completed all sections of the abstract submission form and, if applicable, the YIA Application Form.
